SEMMA is the peak industry association representing over 200 leading manufacturing companies located in Melbourne’s South East region.

We advocate for good government policy and decision making to assist in keeping manufacturing viable in a global context.

As a professional association, it is our business to know everything manufacturing. This means we are familiar with changes that effect industry performance, opportunities and challenges faced by our members day in, day out. We share this intelligence for the benefit of members to give them the greatest chance of ongoing success.

Our Charter is to:

  • Influence Governments apolitically on manufacturing issues;
  • Promote Members’ and regional capability both locally and internationally;
  • Identify business opportunities and stimulate manufacturing businesses;
  • Encourage collaboration between members;
  • Collaborate with other institutions such as CSIRO, Universities and government bodies; and
  • Commit to corporate, environmental and social responsibilities.

At SEMMA, we also recognise the importance of manufacturing to the community at large, which is why we want all members to be high achievers. High performing manufacturers results in the industry continuing to be a powerhouse of economic development for the region. Why is this important you may ask? Because studies have revealed that in manufacturing, for every $1 million in new or retained output, up to 6-10 equivalent full time (EFT) jobs are provided*. Therefore, the multiplier effects from the growth of any one manufacturer has the potential to positively impact your business, and as long as the industry is succeeding, then win-wins are experienced all around.

SEMMA is managed by an elected board of 10 voluntary manufacturing members, plus 1 from education, 1 from R&D, 1 Global specialist and 2 from City of Greater Dandenong Business Development.

SEMMA (South East Melbourne Manufacturers’ Alliance) was established and launched in 2003 as a 'united voice' to recognise the world-class capabilities and skills of the region.

Following workshops held in October 2002 and sponsored by the City of Greater Dandenong, it became apparent that the economically significant manufacturing sector located in Melbourne’s South East needed representation. The sector required a ‘united voice’ so that the world-class capabilities and skills of the region could be appropriately recognised and heard by government and peak industry organisations.

As a result, SEMMA (South East Melbourne Manufacturers’ Alliance) was established and launched in 2003. This new independent association was formed to cooperate with relevant organisations and proactively represent manufacturers on matters of importance to the industry and the region. These manufacturers are world leaders and provide both local and international customers with superior products and services.

In addition to advocating for its members, SEMMA also encourages and facilitates the sharing of capacity and capability and promotes the exchange of information and technology so that the industry continues to prosper for generations to come.
