"LUNCH WITH THE WINNERS" - 7 September 2010

SEMMA together with South East Business Networks (SEBN) and SELLEN will host our annual "Lunch with the Winners" event on Tuesday 7 September in the Committee Room at Sandown Park Racecourse.

Year 9 & 10 students and teachers from local schools and business people from the South East corridor are encouraged to attend.

Our guest speakers will feature local success stories who will be interviewed about their journey from school life through to their achievements in the workforce.

They will touch on their experiences; from study choices and planning, experience gained within their career – focusing on the importance of choosing careers that they have a connection with and feel passionate about.

A feature of the event is that teachers and students are able to chat to the various business people at their tables to gain some insight into what companies may be looking for in their employees.

The students are able to attend this function at no charge due to the generosity of local businesses who sponsor the cost of tables.

If you are interested in attending this event or sponsoring a table please contact -pdowli@cgd.vic.gov.au or 9771 6617

"DOING BUSINESS WITH DEFENCE" FORUM

SEMMA conducted a "Doing Business with Defence" Forum at The Drum Theatre in Dandenong.

SEMMA in conjunction with the Defence Material Organisation (DMO) invited members to attend the briefing by the DMO's Business Access Office about how to do business with Defence.

This was a preliminary briefing aimed at business operators who wanted to find out about the business opportunities available from the Defence sector. It was a chance to learn where the Defence and the DMO sit within the Federal Government, the basics of Government Procurement, the best ways to engage the Defence and how to prepare your company to take advantage of potential business opportunites.

At the completion of the DMO presentation, there was an opportunity to discuss potential projects and how SEMMA members could become involved.

SEMMA held this forum as a follow up to the "Buy Local" forum which identified real opportunities for members to trade between themselves.

The next "Doing Business With ..." forum is scheduled to be held in August-September 2010.

SEMMA WorkCover Forum – “The Impending Changes That Might Impact Your Workers Compensation Premium”

These WorkCover forums are now a regular event on the SEMMA calendar. The most recent was held at The Drum Theatre on 24 March 2010.

Hosted by SEMMA Vice President James Sturgess, this forum provided an overview of the changes and developments likely to affect members WorkCover situation, in particular current and future premiums.

A Panel comprising representatives from Medical, Legal, Claims Agent and Claims / Premium Consultant reviewed current issues and potential changes relating to return to work, surveillance,  redundancy, pre-employment checks, agents obligations, training, WorkSafe’s current WorkHealth program plus members specific issues.

The feedback received indicated that attendees gained a valuable insight on how early positive action, working in conjunction with WorkCover Agents can have a positive effect on premiums.

The next forum is scheduled for October 2010

SEMMA WORKCOVER INITIATIVE

SEMMA has formally launched the first of a series of WorkCover Initiatives - a Service Level Agreement with its chosen WorkCover agent, Xchanging

Through the SEMMA Service Level Agreement (SLA), Xchanging will:

  • Communicate with clients PRIOR to accepting or refusing a claim
  • Provide a dedicated account executive and support team for SEMMA members
  • Provide you with monthly reports on claims costs and premium projections
  • Respond to all phone or email enquiries within 24 hours and written enquiries within 5 days
  • If, for any reason, you have a problem with the agent, you can ring SEMMA and Paul Dowling will speak directly to the company on your behalf - You should never have to make more than two phone calls to resolve an issue
  • Provide proactive general advice, site visits and medical advice (several doctors are on staff)
  • Arrange regular presentations and updates on safety, WorkCover and other relevant issues

Getting on board with this initiative is simple:

  • Request (from SEMMA) and complete a "Request for Change of WorkCover Agent Form" to become an Xchanging client and transfer all your cases to them (they can even help you resolve your previous claims cases).
  • There is no cost to transfer agents, and if you get it in by the 23rd of June, Xchanging will become your agent beginning 1 July. In Victoria, you are able to change at any time and it will take effect the 1st of the following month, but we encourage you to move to Xchanging as soon as possible to start getting quality customer service.
  • Once you complete that form, or if you are already an Xchanging client, please complete the "SEMMA Letter of Authority" document attached. This allows SEMMA to contact Xchanging on your behalf and discuss your claims. (We will ONLY do this if you have asked us to contact them, however, the form must be filled out to authorise it.)
  • This also authorises Xchanging to pay SEMMA a 1% commission that comes out of Xchanging's pocket - not yours.

Why should you do it?

The bottom line is that Xchanging offers you better customer service and supports SEMMA at the same time. So what have you got to lose? Just complete the forms and get them to us by the end of the week to get on board starting 1 July.

As we mentioned before, this is the first of several initiatives. SEMMA is already working on the next initiative for members.

The second initiative - Grouping - was also announced at the meeting:

Collectively groups all SEMMA members' annual wages for calculating individual WorkCover premiums

  • This will increase the percentage of premium determined by individual claims performance and decrease the percentage determined by industry for companies of all sizes
  • If your company's claims are below the industry average, your premiums will be reduced under this initiative
  • Current indications suggest savings of 10%-25%
  • Premiums will then be based on individual company's performance and NOT the large group's
  • The target date for implementation is July 2007
  • This "grouping" has never been done in Victoria i.e. a SEMMA first
  • It will require VWA and Ministerial approval

To obtain the paperwork, or if you have any questions or concerns, please contact Paul Dowling on 9238 1565 or pdowli@cgd.vic.gov.au.
